Lupita Murillo joined the News 4 team in 1978 as a general assignments reporter, specializing in crime reporting.  

Before coming to Tucson, Lupita worked at KRGV-TV in Weslaco, Texas - first as a reporter and then as weekend anchor.  She can be considered something of a pioneer in her field - working as the first Hispanic female in broadcasting in South Texas, which is a little unusual considering the region is about 85-percent Hispanic.

Born and raised in the South Texas, Lupita attended what is now the University of Texas at Pan American majoring in Mass Communications.

Lupita has earned a lot of recognition for her work over the years, including awards from the Arizona Press Club, United Press International, the Associated Press, she has also earned numerous Edward  R. Murrow awards and many community organizations.  She is also been recognized nationally by the American Women in Radio and Television.  Lupita received the  University of Arizona Hispanic Alumni  Portraits of Excellence award for her involvement in the community. In October 2017, she was inducted in to the Academy of Arts and Sciences Silver Circle at the Emmys Ceremony.   She was also recognized by Homicide Survivors and given the Esperanza Award for helping families.

Currently she is part of the News 4 Tucson’s Investigators.  She is the Digging Deeper investigative reporter

Lupita is very active in the community, giving her time to numerous organizations and charities such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson and Santa Cruz County, the U of A’s  Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, Father of the Year Awards benefitting children with diabetes,  TIHAN, and has been supporting the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation for over 20 years!

 In the little free time she has, Lupita enjoys  baking her famous Rum Cakes, working out, and especially spending time with her husband Don Gutzler.
